Common requirements to get hired as a Firefighter.

Application Filing/Resume
  • Submit a completed application prior to the closing date.
  • Have significant applicable information to input.
  • Attach a professional and complete resume to your file.
Written Examination
  • Common to have 100 questions.
  • Multiple choice
  • IFSTA, CWH, CPS, etc.
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Mechanical Aptitude
  • Listening/Retention
Physical Agility Test
  • Multi-functional movements, complex movements that are similar to firefighting operations.
  • Department Specific test (some have swim test combined)
  • CPAT
  • Biddle (specific to Southern California)
Oral Interview Process
  • Initial Interview
    • Panel Interview with ranked personnel from Firefighters up to Captains
    • Scenario based questions.
    • Personal questions
    • Typically ranked based on combination of results: Interview, written exam, and physical agility. The top tier continues on in the process.
  • Chiefs Interview
    • Panel or individual interview with Battalion Chiefs or above.
    • Scenario questions
    • Personal questions
    • Determines whether or not you will receive a “conditional job offer.”
Background Investigation
  • Deep dive into your past
  • Report previous work experience, schools, references, etc.
  • Provide driving history.
  • Will review drug history.
  • Honest and thorough reporting is imperative.
Polygraph Examination
  • Can be a written test or electrical (EKG).
  • Evaluation with a licensed psychologist
  • Reveal everything you’ve done in life, good and bad.
Psychological Evaluation
  • One on one evaluation with licensed psychologist.
  • Multiphasic psychological test administered.
Medical Examination
  • Full medical exam
  • Blood work, hearing, vision, resting and/or stress electrocardiogram.
  • Physical assessment, 12-lead EKG.
